Samurai Feep o' Lantern - Feeping Creatures monster figurine

Posting may be a bit sporadic over the next few weeks - lots of projects, and a bit of travel. I'll update here as often as I can, but don't be surprised if it ain't every day.

Also, damn. Look at how much crappier my photos with the old camera were. But hey, if you're not improving here and there you're doing something wrong.

Halloween Feep-o-Lantern

It is, of course, time for the annual showing of the feep-o-lantern. This year's offering is something of a mad scientist type who just drank the transformation concoction:

Grinning Feep-o-Lantern

What February really needs is a bit more Halloween.

Samurai Feep-o-Lantern

After three solid months of easy themes I was trying to think of something that typifies January. Were I up north it would be snow, snow, and more snow. But here? Just kinda cold(ish) and gray. Not a very exciting theme. So instead, let's just keep Halloween going.

Glow-in-the-Dark Feep-o-Lantern

It seemed an appropriate subject matter for glow-in-the-dark.

Eyeball Feep-o-Lantern

Welcome to 2011, y'all. My glasses broke last night, so today I have even more empathy for my little one-eyed creations than I might ordinarily.

Grimace Feep-o-Lantern

This is from a recent commission to make some feepy pumpkins. The feep is hanging out with a handful of burr oak acorns, so it's not that the feep is unusually small, but rather the acorns are unusually large.

Feep-o-Lantern Alight

Well, my carving tool broke while I was working on this one, so I had to finish it with a knife. Not the ideal circumstances for making a feep-o-lantern, but what can one do?

Happy Halloween, y'alls.

Feep-o-Lantern

Spookytime is checking out your bookshelf, judging your selections ...

[Last year's feep-o-lantern. I'll be carving this year's on Saturday. Expect to see those eyeball candles again.]

Feep-o-Lantern

Thus it begins:

I've started by cutting the eye socket, since if the eyeball didn't fit properly I'd have to rethink the design. Once I've got the eye socket right, I draw in the rest of the design with a sharpie and start cutting bits away with the detail saw.

Now it's all cut out, but I'll need to put in a vent for the eye candle. Time to light it up and see which bits catch fire!

Because of the shape of the pumpkin the vent has to be a pretty big slice. So I turn it into a furrowed brow.

The eyeball candle lights up the pumpkin relatively well, but I want it to be even brighter, so I add a little pumpkin candle at the bottom.

I'm not quite sure what the story is here. Did the big pumpkin eat the little one? Or is the little one controlling the big one from within?

Feep-O-Lanterns!

These photos were sent to me yesterday, and I had no choice but to make them my Daily Monster post for Halloween. Observe the feep-o-lanterns!
