Feep-o-Lantern

Thus it begins:

I've started by cutting the eye socket, since if the eyeball didn't fit properly I'd have to rethink the design. Once I've got the eye socket right, I draw in the rest of the design with a sharpie and start cutting bits away with the detail saw.

Now it's all cut out, but I'll need to put in a vent for the eye candle. Time to light it up and see which bits catch fire!

Because of the shape of the pumpkin the vent has to be a pretty big slice. So I turn it into a furrowed brow.

The eyeball candle lights up the pumpkin relatively well, but I want it to be even brighter, so I add a little pumpkin candle at the bottom.

I'm not quite sure what the story is here. Did the big pumpkin eat the little one? Or is the little one controlling the big one from within?

Blue Cat

Halloween is nigh! And o yes, I shall be carving feep-o-lanterns, and I shall be posting pictures forthwith.

Grey Tentacle Twist

Looks longingly out the window, wanting nothing more than to go play, but alas, there are children to frighten and lone teenagers to devour.

Spider-Face Curl and ASG Art Show closing party

So! The closing party for the ASG Art Show, in which I have many feep drawings displayed, will be this Sunday! That's Nov. 1, 2009 at the Hideout (617 Congress Ave) in downtown Austin. Sketchgroup itself is from 2:00 - 6:00 if you want to hang out and draw. The party goes on until closing at 9:00.

There will be booze and food. Any art you buy you can take home with you right then and there. Come hang out, chat with the artists, drink some wine, and buy some art so I don't have to carry all that stuff home!

One-Eyed von Snoot

An example of the rare and elusive one-eyed von Snoot. How they are able to escape in a hurry when they don't have any depth perception is a mystery.

Blue & Red Curl

Ya know, I'm not actually sure if that curl atop the feep's head is decorative like plumage, or if it's prehensile and functional.

Triclops Squid Monster ACEO

I'm not quite sure if it's under the sea, or if it lives on a planet with a very watery sky.

Carnivorous Santa Hat Orneryment

The stores have, of course, already rolled out their Christmas wares, which makes some folks very happy. Particularly when they need the camouflage.

Phoenix Vulture

I guess a phoenix vulture rises up from the carrion?

Purple Longhorn with Pumpkin Pie

Okay, so this is last year's pie, since I haven't had time to make one yet this year. Oh, but I shall.

Snout Hornworm

It's about time to pick up another pile of gourds for a fall feep fotoshoot.

Green Round with Curly Tentacles

I suppose this one has vaguely earmuff-like appendages.

Horned Green Blob

See, you can get as far as training the feeps to open the coffee container, but they lose interest once it comes time to actually make the coffee. And then you've got a bunch of bored feeps who know how to open jars. It's a bad scene.

Red Taunting Devil

Partied too hard at my grandfather's 90th birthday party. I'm not even kidding.

Resting Dragon

Must defeat dragon to claim coffee.

Cyclopean Vampire Bunnybat

Let's end this cyclops silliness with a new drawing I just finished. You might think that having no depth perception would make flying especially challenging, but forget ye not the sonar, and how well those big ears would pick it up. The eyeball is practically decorative!

Horned Cyclops Magnet

I suppose it stands to reason that my 3D artwork would occasionally be skeptical about my 2D artwork. I'm sure the reverse is true as well.

Red Cyclops Demon

Cyclops week continues, because why the heck not.

My attempts to train feeps to eat fruit flies, by the way, were unsuccessful.

Swirl Cap Cyclops

Hum. I guess it's cyclops week here at the Daily Monster. Anyway, the Swirl Cap Cyclops would like you to know that ball moss is not actually a moss. It's a true plant with flowers and seeds, and is apparently related to the pineapple. So there you have it.

Tall Green Cyclops

Not quite sure why this style of feep merits being labeled a cyclops while all the other one-eyed feeps don't, but taxonomy can be fickle that way.

Psychedelic Cat

At some point I randomly decided to make a different cat design, figuring I could always make old skool cats (like this one here) if I felt like it. For some reason I just haven't. Perhaps this branch of the feep evolutionary tree has ended!

Commissioned Feep Version of The Crow

I don't generally do other people's characters, but I see James o'Barr at many of the conventions I do, and his webmaster collects interpretations of The Crow done by a huge variety of artists. It took several iterations to get the form right (i.e., recognizably a specific human, but small and cartoony like a feep), but was definitely an interesting and worthwhile challenge.

Eyestalk Slug

I've been a bit under the weather this week, and am therefore even less able to come up with silly captions than usual.

Cranky Green Devil Wine Charm

Today's feep is dedicated to the neighbor who decided to get a very, very early start on edging the lawn.

Monday, October 5, 2009

Eyeless Cat Monster

This is, I'm pretty sure, what woke me up two or three times during the night. Couldn't have been my own perfectly innocent* little cat.

* For certain, very forgiving definitions of "innocent."

Feeps: The Making Of

The feeps have a dedicated toaster oven in which I bake them once I'm done sculpting. These Octopi are perched on glass ramekins so their tentacles will hang down as they sit upon your monitor or shelf.

Wall o' Feep

This is my space in the ASG show at the Hideout. It's right across from the counter.

Floating Gourd Monster ACEO

October is a month for gourds, and a month for monsters. Naturally, it follows that it is also a month for gourd monsters. Voila!

Cat Monster and ASG Art Show

The Austin Sketchgroup Art Show goes up today, and this is one of the pieces I'll be displaying, along with all the other new ACEOs I've been posting lately. I've done nine new pieces, so if you've been out to one of my shows recently you should come by again to see the new stuff.

The show is going to be at The Hideout, which is at 617 Congress Ave., right here in Austin. It'll be up for the duration of October. There will be a reception at some point, which I will announce here once I know the date.
